Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides — MacMillan, $15.00
“One of my all time favorite books. Why? Well, where do I start? A fictional account of three generations of a Greek
family that emigrates to Detroit. The History of the city, including the beginning of the auto industry, the evolution of neighborhoods divided by race and class, and the individual story of the main character will keep you
riveted. Whether a native Michigander or transplant like me, if you enjoy a good family saga that gives you an
amazingly rich portrait of Detroit you will love this book. Some of the most compelling prose I have ever read.”

The structure of a bookstore may be defined by the owner or manager but the heart of it relies on each and every staff member. As a customer you know that Horizon Books is always open and you choose your favorite or most convenient time to visit. If you’re a regular member of Wednesday night Chess Club, Kathy Seekins knows you by name.

Kathy has worked at Horizon Books for more than 25 years as a part-time employee, all the while with a full time career in banking. How rare is it to maintain a part-time job for that long? We suspect about as rare as Kathy is herself. All of us have come to admire her tireless energy and cheerfulness. Kathy asks for work when she walks in the door and jumps into it eagerly. She cares to make Horizon successful by insisting on doing it right and always offering cheerful service. You’d find it hard to believe she’s a great-grandmother if you met her. We consider her a treasure and friend.
