This Kalamazoo-based author is one of my favorites! And the main character in this book, Margo, is one of my favorite fictional characters. Although the novel takes place in the late 1970's and early 80's, it feels very timeless, and Margo feels like a pioneer woman. While bad things happen to Margo, and she sets off on her own on the Kalamazoo River, her strength of character and determination to make her way no matter what makes her the best heroine I know!

Description

"Bonnie Jo Campbell has built her new novel like a modern-day craftsman from the old timbers of our national myths about loners living off the land, rugged tales as perilous as they are alluring. Without sacrificing any of its originality, this story comes bearing the saw marks of classic American literature, the rough-hewn sister of The Leatherstocking Tales, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and Walden. Ron Charles, Washington Post.
