This is the second in the Sleuth Sisters mystery series, by a Michigan author, and I love it as much as the first one! 3 sisters who are each unique live in the small fictional town of Allport (which I think of as Alpena) on Lake Huron, and run a detective agency. The sisters work together, argue together and usually end up in some precarious situations. Since this one takes place in winter, with plenty of action in the frozen wilderness, this seems like a good book to read during the last of our winter storms this month.

When Retta's "gentleman friend" is accused of murder, the Sleuth Sisters take on the case. Winston Darrow is a charmer, but his secrets create trouble that spills onto sisters Retta, Barb, and Faye, and even police chief Rory Neuencamp. Someone is out to harm Win, someone he claims committed the crime he is suspected of committing. While Retta admits that Styx, her daffy Newfoundland dog, is more trustworthy than Win, she doesn't think Win is capable of murder. Mysterious men pop up wherever the sisters go, each more threatening than the last. What do they want with their client? As the situation turns more dangerous, they hide Win at Rory's cabin, reachable in a Michigan winter only by snowmobile. In the frozen wilderness, Barb and Retta must ignore their differences and work together to stay alive. Back at home, Faye faces a deadly enemy with only her rescue dog and a couple of horses for help. If they all live through this investigation, it will be due to sister solidarity, doggie instincts, and loyal friends. But really, who could ask for more?
