Wuthering Heights (Paperback)
Set in the north of England on the wild moors and craggy hillsides of Yorkshire, it has always been touted as a romance, but can surely be seen as a story of passionate revenge. Catherine and Heathcliff have a relationship that is ever-suffering. Their dark pull toward each other is fierce and somewhat tormented. It depicts what in humans can not always be controlled.
This book is definitely my favorite classic of all time! I cherish it differently every time I read it.— laurie
Although Wuthering Heights is now a classic of English literature, contemporaneous reviews were deeply polarised; it was controversial because of its unusually stark depiction of mental and physical cruelty, and it challenged strict Victorian ideals regarding religious hypocrisy, morality, social classes and gender inequality.
The novel also explores the effects of envy, nostalgia, pessimism and resentment. The book's core theme is the destructive effect of jealousy and vengefulness both on the jealous or vengeful individuals and on their communities.
It has gone on to inspire countless writers and creations in both film and writings. This is the pure unadulterated version of the story that has inspired so many and given such wonder to peoples lives. Read on, you won't be disappointed...
