Paolo Sarpi was the great adversary of the papacy of the Counter-Reformation and an early advocate of the separation of church and state in Venice. Taking Sarpi's homosexuality into account makes it possible to understand certain aspects of his thinking that have, until now, remained elusive, and brings new meaning to his fight for individual autonomy.
