I read and reread the entire Redwall series many times as a child, enthralled by the struggle between the gentle, wise mice of Redwall Abbey, their allies, and the rats, weasels, and snakes which seek to bring evil and chaos to the forest. This is the first, titular book in the series, and it introduces readers to the rich world Jacques creates. Like so many great hero stories, the younger generation of mice must both rely on and transcend the wisdom and power of their ancestors in order to repel the threat of the approaching rat hordes. The story has a little mystery, a lot of great, description, and the inherently compelling central narrative  of the quest for triumph over evil. Reading this again is bringing back so many memories!!

The Prophet (A Penguin Classics Hardcover) Cover Image

February, to me, is about two things: love and reflection. We celebrate Valentine's Day, and yet the cold and gray drag on and suffuse us with an acute awareness and appreciation of warmth. This book, Gibran's most successful work in English, provides reflections on and insights into love, relationships, pain, work, and many other universal themes. My mother once remarked to me that she thought every married couple should own a copy of The Prophet, due to both the quality of Gibran's writing and the profundity of his words. Somewhere between poetry and prose, this book tells a story and yet retains immense value as a resource to be consulted from time to time concerning so many aspects of life. Also, it's even cooler when you realize English is not his first language.

Siddhartha: A Novel Cover Image

Published: Bantam - December 1st, 1981

Although it is never the wrong time for a classic, the beginning of a new year brings a sense of one chapter ending and another beginning. This recognition of the necessity of changes, departures, and returns is what has always most toughed me about Siddhartha's journey through these pages.
It is not a lengthy or difficult read, but this is one of the books I find unearthing again from time to time, always finding a new experience or question of mine reflected or clarified by Hesse. This isn't the fancy sports car -- but it's a story you can really put some miles on.
