Set in small town North Carolina, this story of loss, change, and religious manipulation is told by three distinct voices. Clem Barefield is the town sheriff, and struggles with feelings of grief from his past. 18 year old Adelaide Lyle is the town's midwife, and one of the few who have the strength to remain un-persuaded. Most captivating however, is the voice of Jesse Hall, a young boy with more curiosity than is safe, and who's first priority is always protecting "Stump", his mute older brother. As the chapters switch between perspectives, piece by piece the reality of what the small community has changed into becomes clear, and more upsetting. At the center of the damage is the River Road Church of Christ in Signs Following, and a man that convinces the community that faith and violence can, and should, go hand in hand.

OCTOBER 2019

When I'm looking for a new book, I like to try and find a story told in a unique voice, and this book is my absolute favorite.
This mystery is written from the perspective of Christopher, a fifteen year old boy who is on the autism spectrum. He narrates (with a ton of detail) his experiences while he steps far out of his comfort zone to figure out what the adults in his life aren't telling him. Christopher tells his story in such a unique and interesting way, I think it's impossible to not love him by the end of the novel. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a story from a completely new perspective. I also recommend it to you in specific. If you don't like it, that's on me, bit I'm pretty confident you will.
